Keeping Mosquitoes Out of Your Yard
It is the summertime, which is the peak time for pools, picnics, and BBQs . . . . but also for mosquitoes.
It is possible to reduce or even eliminate mosquitoes from your yard this summer. You may have seen the numerous professional mosquito control services are a popping up everywhere and catering to people who want to take back their backyard. The great news is that you can do these same treatments yourself in less than 30 minutes and over 75% of your money!
Do mosquito yard treatments work?
Yes. I typically see a 50% to 100% reduction in mosquitoes. The larger an area you can treat the better the results you will have. Most mosquitoes travel no more than 300 feet from where they hatched. If you have a very small yard, mosquitoes may still be breeding in your neighbor’s yard and flying over the fence.
How do mosquito yard treatments work?
It is a three-step process.
- Treat mosquito resting areas. Mosquitoes fly around less than 10% of the time. Most of the time they are resting on the underside of plant leaves, walls, and other surfaces between 6” off the ground and 10 feet high. Treat these areas with a mix of a good long-lasting micro-cap insecticide and an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). The micro-cap insecticide (such as FenvaStar, Onslaught FastCap, or Demand CS) will reduce the population of adult mosquitoes. The IGR (such as Nyguard IGR) will stop any survivors from breeding.
- Eliminate Breeding Sites & Standing Water – Empty or treat birdbaths, kiddie-pools, gutters, buckets, and anything else holding water. Mosquitoes can breed in less than 1oz of water!!! You can treat most standing water in your yard with larvacides such as Altosid Pro-G.
- Inspect and retreat as needed – Most people treat monthly during mosquito season. If mosquito pressure is high or there is a lot of rain treatments may need to be twice a month. In cool, dry seasons you may be able to go two months between treatments.
What do I need to buy to treat my yard for mosquitoes?
Equipment: For most yards a small handheld pump-up sprayer or pump-up backpack sprayer is perfect. Most average homes only take about two gallons to treat. For large properties (acres) a gas-powered mist-blower such as the Stihl SR200 covers a lot of area fast.
